COURSE OF FIRE, spring 2026
Please be advised that participants may not beg, borrow, steal or buy ammo once they start the race. Several people have underestimated their ammo needs in previous races and were forced to DNF some stages, so be sure to bring enough. Participants who run out of ammo will receive DNFs on the rest of the course. Skilled shooters should double the round count and then carry a little extra, at a minimum. The minimum round count for Saturday is typically about 50 pistol and 60 rifle. Sunday is generally about 35 rounds of each.
Also note that Range Finders are not permitted at WTF events. Shooters may not use such devices while at a stage or while on wait time. Furthermore, shooters may not use their scopes to glass targets while on wait time. There is a reason that target distances are not announced or published. We do not want some competitors to be able to cheaply gain an important information advantage over others through the use of Range Finders.
***PLEASE NO M855 (GREEN TIP) OR OTHER AP TYPE AMMO. MAKE SURE TO READ THE AMMO POLICY IN THE "BIATHLON" PAGE OF THIS WEBSITE***
Stage 1: Road Rage – Pistol/Rifle
Participants will start the stage seated in the driver's seat with hands on the wheel at 10 and 2, just like they taught us in Driver's Ed. The rifle will start unloaded and in the trunk. On the "fire" command, draw your pistol and engage all pistol targets, with one hit each. Exit the vehicle and move toward the trunk. BE SURE TO KEEP YOUR MUZZLE POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION DURING THIS PART!!! Re-engage the pistol targets with one hit per target. Holster your pistol and retrieve your rifle from the trunk, then move through the 6 designated rifle positions, engaging the rifle target with two hits from each position.
8 Pistol, 12 Rifle. Sunday Sprint is 1 hit per target with rifle, for 8 Pistol, 6 Rifle.
Between Stages 1 and 2 is an obstacle area. Everyone is required to crawl through a tube and scale the tire wall. Anyone who does not is required to ask the RO 3 questions about AK pattern rifles, mini-vans, or men's hair care products, and stay there until the answers have been given in full. I suggest doing the obstacles if you want to finish the course before Halloween...
Stage 2: Prone Out – Rifle *Sponsored by Thunder Beast Arms
Competitors will carry a tire (no rolling it!) from the start box to the shooting position. Then load your rifle and engage the targets, which will be at medium to long range. The distance to each target will vary (time to find out if you know how to use your ranging reticle). There will be 5 targets, with 2 hits per target required. On Saturday, the sequence will be near to far strong side, one hit per target, then switch to support side and go near to far again. Sunday one hit per target, near to far.
10 Rifle. Sunday Sprint: One hit per target. 5 Rifle.
Bonus: Any competitors who do not DNF Stage 2 will be invited to try to hit the bonus target. The firing position for that is a very short distance away. Shooters will get 3 attempts to hit the target. Maximum possible score is 3.
Major Obstacle: Monkey Bars
This is a non-shooting obstacle located at Stage 3. Participants may choose whether to complete the obstacle or take the time penalty. The object is to start on the low end of the bars and climb to the higher end. Once there, climb down the support ladder. All equipment must stay on. Participants MAY NOT walk or crawl on top of the monkey bars. Due to a number of injuries and close-calls, participants may only use their hands to move across the monkey bars. You must go hand over hand with your feet swinging free underneath you, so that if you fall you will land on your feet. We can't have people taking the Nestea Plunge from 11' off the ground! Time penalty for non-completion is 15 minutes. Sunday Sprint: 7 minutes. Anyone who does not complete the obstacle will be required to carry an object to a designated place and back to the monkey bars.
Stage 3: Carmageddon: Grab Your Sack and Get to Work! – Rifle/Pistol *Sponsored by B.Y.O.T Auto Parts
On the Fire command, draw your pistol and engage the two pistol targets in/around the nearest vehicle with 2 hits each. *** BOTH FEET MUST REMAIN INSIDE THE WHITE BOX AT ALL TIMES. NO MOVING THE BOX. *** Holster your pistol and advance to the vehicle. Once there, load your rifle and engage the first group of rifle targets (in the convertible). After that, retrieve the duffel bag and move on to the next position (maroon car), engage medium-range targets at the area with 2 cars (van/Saab in the middle of the field), then move to the pickup truck and climb up into the bed and engage the targets in/near the Suburban. Shooting positions will be in, on, around and through the cars. Some targets will be inside a vehicle, and others will be behind vehicles. There are 3 to 6 targets per shooting position. Each target requires 2 hits. This stage will require some movement to see all targets from a given shooting position. Please put your rifle on Safe and keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction when moving.
24 Rifle, 4 Pistol. Sunday Sprint: 1 rifle hit per target. 12 Rifle, 4 Pistol.
Stage 4: Mozambique Mania - pistol
On the "fire" command, crawl under the tire obstacle to the other side. Once there, draw your pistol and hit each Mozambique target twice in the body and once in the head, through the hole in the barricade. FROM A KNEELING POSITION, holster your pistol. Crawl under the next section of tires to the next barricade and repeat the process on the same targets. Then move forward to the third shooting position and repeat the targets again, from a standing position. (Shooters are NOT required to holster to move to the third shooting position.) From your standing position, make one hit on the red long-range target to end the stage.
19 Pistol Saturday. Same on Sunday.
Major Obstacle: THE WALL
THE WALL is a non-shooting obstacle located at Stages 5. Participants may choose whether to climb over or take the time penalty. We encourage everybody to at least give it a try, as it is a serious gut-check and an opportunity to find out whether it would be possible to scale an 8' obstacle in a situation in which that is the only way to evade hostile forces, or to rescue your buddies. This is a test of physical strength and is designed to allow participants to prove whether they can drag themselves and their equipment over the top without any ladders, tools or assistance. The rules are simple: Runners must have all of their equipment on. (Anything thrown over the wall is considered a donation to the IRGC.) The 2x4 supports on either side of THE WALL may not be touched or used in any way. Participants must start from the ground (no bringing anything to stand on) and use only their bodies to get over. Just jump up, grab the top, do a pull-up and swing a leg over. Time penalty for non-completion is 15 minutes. Sunday Sprint: 7 minutes. Anyone who does not go over the wall will be required to do the tire flip x2.
Stage 5: No (deer) Standing Around – Pistol and Rifle
On the “fire” command, move to the pistol position (red wood blocks) and engage all pistol targets, 2 hits each. Holster your pistol then move to the Deer stand and climb up. Once you are inside, get your rifle out of the left window only THEN make your rifle hot and engage all 5 rifle targets, 2 hits each.
Saturday: 6 pistol, 10 rifle. Sunday: Same
Stage 6: What a Drag! – Rifle
From the start position, drag your buddy to safety by taking him to cover near the ladder. You may not just drop him at the base of the ladder; he must be leaning up against cover in a seated position to the left or right of the ladder. Once done with that, climb the ladder and engage each of 3 rifle targets with 1 hit each from each of the 4 shooting positions.
Saturday: 12 Rifle. Sunday: one rifle target will be removed, 8 Rifle.
Stage 7: Flip it good! – pistol
When a tire comes along, you must flip it... On the fire command, shooters must flip the tire over one time, then advance to the first firing position. Draw your pistol and hit each of the visible single targets twice, two to the body and one to the head on any Mozambique-style targets. Move to the next shooting box and repeat on the next set of targets, only this time the shooter must hold a weight in the strong hand and shoot support hand only. Drop the weight, move to the third box and repeat, holding the next weight in support hand and shooting strong hand only.
20 Pistol. Sunday Sprint: NA
Total round count is Saturday 68 rifle plus 3 bonus, 57 pistol. Sunday round count is 41 rifle plus 3 bonus, 37 pistol.
